Beat The Heat On Your Summer Disney Vacation

There’s no denying that Florida summers are hot. And if you’re like many families who need to take their Disney vacation in June, July or August, you need a plan to deal with the heat.
If your in the planning stages, heat and sun play a role in my resort choice in the summer. Disney’s value resorts don’t really have shelter from the sun at the bus stop at the resort. We realized this in July 2007 when we stayed at the Pop Century resort. And because the value resorts are so large, often times a bus to a park would arrive, fill with people, leaving a line of guests still waiting in the hot sun for the next bus. And even at 8 am, the sun is hot. For this reason alone I prefer a moderate resort over a value in the summer. The moderate resorts have shelter from the sun at the bus stops.
But if you’ve already planned your trip, regardless of where you’re staying, you need a plan for when you’re in the parks.
Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do. And if those water bottles in the parks are too expensive, then arrange for a case of bottled water to be delivered to your resort and fill up the mini refrigerator in your room. I did this in November when I spent 10 nights in Walt Disney World. Cost was under $10 for the case.
Wearing a hat can also keep the hot sun from beating down on you.
Taking a midday pool break back at the resort during the hottest part of the afternoon was also a big help. You can also head to Disney’s two water parks – Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach – to cool off. Just remember that this is what a lot of people do in the afternoon so the water parks get crowded then.
The New Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom has a new water play area called Casey Jr. It’s themed after the friendly train in the movie Dumbo. There is no age restriction to this area located near the train station in the New Fantasyland.
Epcot has an area on the walkway from Future World to the World Showcase where water shoots out from the ground in random increments. This is a popular place for kids to get soaked during the hot summer months.
If you’re in Animal Kingdom on a hot day, just head over to Kali River Rapids to cool off. I’ve never seen anyone come off this attraction dry!
And in conclusion, my best advice is to give yourself enough time during your Disney vacation to take it a little slower in the parks during the summer heat. That way you won’t feel rushed.
